Where to Eat Like a Local in Seoul: 7 Neighbourhood Picks

Skip the tourist streets. Seven local restaurants in Sangdo-dong, Seoul, from cheonggukjang to wood-fired pizza, all within 10 minutes of Maison Sangdo.
If you want to eat like a local in Seoul, skip the tourist streets and go where people actually live. Sangdo-dong is a residential neighbourhood with no tourist menus and no tour-bus queues, just long-loved places where the regulars know exactly what to order. These are the seven we recommend most to guests at Maison Sangdo, our home stay three minutes from Sangdo Station (Line 7). Three of them are on our own street.
Before you go
- Many neighbourhood restaurants take a break between lunch and dinner, and some close early. Check the hours.
- Some dishes, like dak-hanmari, are made for two or more.
- Use Naver Map or Kakao Map for directions. They work much better in Korea than Google Maps.
- Point at the menu or show a photo; staff are used to it.
1. Darae Sikdang: one dish, done well

Darae serves a single dish: jumulleok cheonggukjang, spicy marinated pork simmered in cheonggukjang, a rich fermented soybean stew. Hearty, deeply savoury and what Koreans call bap-doduk, "so good it steals your rice".
