Where to Stay in Seoul Like a Local: Sangdo-dong Guide

Skip Myeongdong and Hongdae: why quiet Sangdo-dong is a smart Seoul base, with Line 7 three minutes away, free parking and a pet-friendly suite.

Where to stay in Seoul is one of the first questions every trip planner asks. Myeongdong, Hongdae and Gangnam are the usual answers, and they're busy, loud and often expensive for the space you get. There's another option: stay where Seoul actually lives. We run Maison Sangdo, a small home stay in Sangdo-dong, so we're biased. Here's an honest look at why this neighbourhood works as a base, and who it suits.

Sangdo-dong in one minute

Sangdo-dong is a residential neighbourhood in Dongjak-gu, on the south side of the Han River, between Yeouido and Gangnam. There are no tourist crowds, just local restaurants, two university campuses, a forest hill and the river. Maison Sangdo is three minutes on foot from Sangdo Station (Line 7).

Getting around from Sangdo

  • Line 7 (Sangdo Station, 3 min walk): direct to the Express Bus Terminal, where you can change to Lines 3 and 9, and on toward Gangnam-gu Office and Konkuk University.
  • Line 9 (Nodeul or Heukseok Station): direct to Yeouido and Gimpo Airport in one direction, the Express Bus Terminal and Gangnam in the other.
  • Line 1 (Noryangjin Station): direct to Seoul Station and City Hall, close to Myeongdong and the palaces.
  • From Incheon Airport: about 60 minutes by Airport Limousine Bus 6019, or by Airport Railroad with a transfer.
  • By car: easy access to Nodeul-ro and the Olympic Expressway, and one free private parking space, which is rare in Seoul.

Who it isn't for: if you want to step out of your door straight into Myeongdong's shopping streets or Hongdae's nightlife, a central hotel will suit you better. Sangdo is for people who like coming home to quiet.
